PediPlace provides comprehensive pediatric services which include:
- treatment of acute illnesses
- treatment and management of asthma and chronic illnesses
- preventive care (annual well child check-ups) and immunizations
- sports physicals
- referrals for specialized medical care
- parent/child health education
- newborn parent health and child safety education
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a preventive exam for children at ages 3 days, 2 weeks, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 24, 30, and 36 months and annually thereafter. In addition, it is recommended that each child receive 40 immunizations between birth and age 10. In 2009, nearly 6,000 patients received access to quality pediatric healthcare and were seen in almost 23,000 office visits. PediPlace is providing families with a medical home that allows them to bring their children to a friendly, familiar place for routine preventative care, immunizations, and a comforting helpful facility when they are sick.
Current Need:
More than 9.4 million children are uninsured in the United States — that is one in eight. According to US Census data, Texas leads the nation with 24% — or one out of five children is uninsured. Today’s economic situation creates hardships for already struggling families. Working parents have to choose between food on the table or a doctor's visit. They delay treatment or preventive care until their only option is an emergency room visit. Without healthcare, a child loses a chance to succeed, and PediPlace provides children of low income families with a chance to remain healthy.
The United Way of Metropolitan Dallas 2007 Needs Assessment indicates that medical expenses increased at a faster rate than other costs at the same time that the number of people without health insurance in Texas continues to lead the nation.
As a further indicator of need, the Texas Education Agency reports that approximately 24% of the students in the Lewisville Independent School District are economically disadvantaged while that number increases to 48% in the Carrollton and Farmers Branch School District.
Jamie (12) is an example of the gravity of the problem. Although employed, Jamie’s parents cannot afford health insurance and do not qualify public programs. Suffering from chronic asthma, her parents would take her to the local emergency room when she couldn’t breathe. Sometimes her situation was so acute that she would be hospitalized for days. Jamie is now a PediPlace patient and her asthma is under control. PediPlace is now her medical home where periodic well child appointments monitor her asthma and medication.
PediPlace is the solution for families of uninsured or underinsured children like Jamie in southern Denton County, and only one of 2 in northwest Dallas County. The existing need for full service, quality pediatric health care, especially preventive care, in this region far surpasses the capacity of either of these facilities. |
