More than 9.4 million children remain uninsured in the United States — that is one in eight. According to US Census data, Texas leads the nation with 24% — or one out of four children is uninsured. Today’s economic situation creates hardships for already struggling families. Working parents have to choose between food on the table or a doctor’s visit. They delay treatment or preventive care until their only option is an emergency room visit. Without healthcare, a child loses a chance to succeed, and PediPlace provides children of low income families with a chance to remain healthy.

The United Way of Metropolitan Dallas 2007 Needs Assessment indicates that medical expenses increased at a faster rate than other costs; at the same time that the number of people without health insurance in Texas continues to lead the nation.

As a further indicator of need, the Texas Education Agency reports that approximately 24% of the students in the Lewisville Independent School District are economically disadvantaged while that number increases to 48% in the Carrollton and Farmers Branch School District.

Healthcare for the uninsured was the number one priority for the Greater Lewisville area according to a January 1992 United Way Community Needs Assessment. The ensuing recommendation of a community task force was the creation of PediPlace. Through local, state, and federal government support, private contributions, and the generosity and endorsement of the American Academy of Pediatrics, PediPlace began serving North Texas communities in 1994. PediPlace is a non-profit healthcare facility for children from birth to nineteen years of age who are uninsured or who qualify for Medicaid or CHIP (the state children's healthcare insurance program). While not a free clinic, PediPlace will not deny medical services because of a family's inability to pay for treatment.
