In recent ratings of best places for children to
live in terms of rate of immunizations, health care, and school dropout
rates, Texas has earned the unfortunate distinction of being 50th out of
50 states.
Since 1994, PediPlace has provided low-cost pediatric medical care
services to children 0-18 years of age with the help of local,
state, federal support, in addition to individual giving.
The 2005 United Way Community Needs
Assessment identifies healthcare access as a top priority.
PediPlace offers services for lower income levels by accepting
Medicaid, CHIPs, and uninsured patients.
In 2006, PediPlace provided over 22,000 units of health care for 6000
children.
In late 2003, PediPlace expanded from 3,000
square feet to 6,000 square feet. The facility increased from 7 exam
rooms to 13 exam rooms. This was done debt free with one-time
donations. PediPlace has a total team of 28 full-time and part- time
staff made up of a Lead Physician M.D., Licensed Nurse Practitioners,
Certified Medical Assistants, and Medical Support staff.
PediPlace is centrally located in Denton County. This gives us the
ability to serve children in Denton, Flower Mound, Lewisville, and many
surrounding cities.
Helping
Our Community
Economic:
Over 21 percent of Texas children are uninsured compared to the national
average of 11.4 percent according to the 2005 Special Report: The
uninsured: A Hidden Burden on Texas Employers and Communities.
In 2006, PediPlace provided a medical home to
over 6,000 children who were either uninsured, or Medicaid and
CHIP eligible. In 2007, we expect to see close to 6,500 children
with over 24,000 office visits.
PedPlace saves the taxpayers and hospitals
thousands of dollars a year on non-emergency and indigent care.
People with moderate to low income are much less likely to
have job-based health insurance coverage than those earning higher wages. Uninsured families with children typically do not
have access to a healthcare provider and will end up in the
emergency room, at the expense of taxpayers and hospitals.
PediPlace partners with area hospitals to make sure that all children
have access to a medical home, regardless of family ability to pay for medical care.
Cultural:
40 percent of the children served by PediPlace live in Hispanic families
and 90 percent do not speak English. Forty Percent of the PediPlace
staff is bilingual in order to accommodate the needs of the non-English
speaking community.
Geographic:
In
Denton County, there is a limited number of Medicaid pediatric medical
providers. PediPlace is a Medicaid provider to children whose families
are unable to access a Medical provider in their community.
